A moment of truth - Identifying victims of a disaster
The ZAKA Scuba Diving Unit is a highly skilled team equipped with various levels of diving gear. It is capable of providing immediate response to search and rescue emergencies throughout Israel at any time. The ZAKA Scuba Diving Unit consists of hundreds of professional divers (mainly non-religious). Men, women, former naval commandos, doctors, lawyers, and businesspeople train together regularly to ensure they can operate at the highest level at all times.
The idea to create the Scuba Diving Unit came from a real need identified by the ZAKA Rescue Unit commanders. During the search for the late Moshe Caniel, who drowned off the coast of Tel Aviv in 2005, hundreds of volunteers explored the coastline while helicopters flew over the area. They realized they were unable to reach the depths of the sea due to a lack of qualified personnel. Learning quickly from this incident, ZAKA established the Scuba Diving Unit in Caniel’s name, 30 days after recovering his body.
